Kolkata Knight Riders became the first team to reach the playoffs by winning the only match of the Indian Premier League on Saturday. Kolkata sealed their place in the playoffs with an 18-run win against Mumbai Indians in a rain-affected match.
Kolkata, who lost the toss and batted first in the match which was reduced to 16 overs due to a late start due to rain, scored 157 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the scheduled 16 overs. Venkatesh Iyer top-scored 42 off 21 balls for Kolkata, who lost both openers cheaply. Nitish Rana scored 33 runs off 23 balls, while Andre Russell added 24 runs and Rinku Singh added 20 runs.
For Mumbai, Jasprit Bumrah and Piyus Chawla took 2 wickets each while Nuwan Thusra and Anshul Kamboj took 1 wicket each.
In reply, Mumbai could score only 139 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 16 overs. Mumbai opener Ishan Kisan scored 40 runs off 22 balls while Tilak Verma scored 32 runs. Rohit Sharma added 19 runs and Naman Dhir added 17 runs.
For Kolkata, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakraborty and Andre Russell took 2 wickets each while Sunil Narine took 1 wicket.
Varun Chakaravarthy became Player of the Match due to his exceptional bowling performance. He took 2 wickets by giving only just 17 runs in his 4 over.
