By defeating Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have managed to reach the playoffs of the Indian Premier League (IPL). RCB qualified for the playoffs by registering a 27-run victory over Chennai in their last match of the league stage.
After winning only 1 match in the first 8 matches, RCB won the next 6 consecutive matches and managed to stay at the fourth position in the points table.
Even though RCB achieved the target of 219 runs, 211 runs were enough for Chennai to advance to the playoffs based on net run rate. RCB needed an 18-run victory to stay ahead of Chennai and reach the playoffs.

Chennai could score only 191 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. For Chennai, opener Rachin Ravindra scored 61 runs off 37 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes. Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten with 42 runs off 22 balls but could not get the team through. Ajinkya Rahane scored 33 runs while Mahendra Singh Dhoni scored 25 runs.
While Yash Dayal took 2 wickets in RCB's win, Glenn Maxwell, Mohammad Siraj, Laeki Ferguson and Cameron Green took 1 wicket each.
Before that, RCB lost the toss and batted first. The home team lost 5 wickets in the scheduled 20 overs and added 218 runs. In the round robin stage, it is certain that Kolkata will be top with 19 points with 1 game remaining. Rajasthan Royals with 16 points and Sunrisers Hyderabad with 15 points are trying for the second place. Hyderabad will face Punjab and Rajasthan will face Kolkata.
In the first Qualifier 1 of the IPL, Kolkata Knight Riders and the second placed team will face each other to enter the final.
Faf du Plesis became Player of the Match due to his brilliant knock of 54 runs in 39 deliveries.
RCB and the third placed team will meet in the eliminator on Tuesday. The winner of that match will play against the losing team in Qualifier 1 to enter the final.
