At the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday, Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated the Mumbai Indians with a score of 277/2 from their 20 overs, breaking the record for the highest total in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Playing in his first IPL match of the year, Travis Head struck a brilliant 62 off 24 balls, while Abhishek Sharma hammered 63 off 23 to build the groundwork.
Aiden Markram (42) and Heinrich Klassen (80) supplied the final push to push the hosts over the 250-mark.
When Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Bangalore) defeated the now-defunct Pune Warriors India in 2013, they managed a record-breaking 263 points in the Indian Premier League, breaking the mark set by Chris Gayle, who recorded the best individual score of 175 runs.
When Mayank Agarwal top-edged a draw to mid-on off Hardik Pandya, SRH lost him. On the other hand, Head was causing chaos as he started off with a brilliant drive off Kwena Maphaka, a teenage debutant pacer, and was dropped by Tim David on five at mid-off.
In a 22-run third over, Head put Maphaka under pressure by hitting two sixes and two overs, the most notable of which was a 98-meter clubbed six over deep mid-wicket. Head tore at Hardik after he had removed Mayank, smashing three incredible fours to take 13 runs off the over.
When Mayank Agarwal top-edged a draw to mid-on off Hardik Pandya, SRH lost him. However, Head was inciting chaos from the opposite side.
SRH made 81/1 in six overs, the best-ever power-play score for the franchise in their IPL history, after Jasprit Bumrah gave up only five runs in his opening over. Head hit two fours, the second of which gave him his 18-ball fifty, and as many sixes after Abhishek Sharma hit a maximum to take 23 runs off Gerald Coetzee.
Head's 62 off 24 balls, which he scored before being removed for trying to upper cut off Coetzee, helped SRH reach their 100 in just the seventh over. If MI thought they would have any relief, they were mistaken because Abhishek took the initiative to keep putting the Uppal through her paces.
Abhishek hit three massive sixes off Piyush Chawla before hitting back-to-back boundaries off Coetzee. He made further misery for Maphaka's difficult night by hitting two fours and as many sixes in just 16 deliveries to get his fifty, surpassing the mark established by an SRH batter and his team-mate Head for the fastest-ever fifty in the competition, which was set 20 deliveries ago.
Before the leg-spinner removed Abhishek with a short ball that he drew straight to deep mid-wicket, Chawla was carted for another six. Klassen joined the formidable group of boundary-shattering players with smashing sixes off of Shams Mulani, Bumrah, and Hardik.
He then hit Coetzee for a six over the long-off fence and then took a brace to get his fifty in twenty-three balls. Maphaka concluded with 0/66 in four overs, the most expensive spell by a debutant in the IPL.
By slamming a Bumrah full-toss over the non-striker for four runs and driving the pacer for another boundary, Klassen increased SRH's lead to 250. In the last over, he proceeded to smash two fours and two sixes off Shams Mulani, creating a new record for the highest-ever IPL score.
MI's bowlers overbowled too many short balls, and their modifications in technique didn't provide the best results while facing an unrelenting barrage from Head, Abhishek, and Klassen. They also gave up a bunch of extras and played poor fielding in what is already becoming an inconsequential contest for them. With the exception of Jasprit Bumrah (0/36), all of the MI bowlers ended up surrendering more than 10 runs per over, so it was a nightmare for them.
